Teens BJJ

Two teen male students are in a scramble on the mats. Both students are wearing blue gis. In the background, coach Trent is on his hands and knees, watching the action. He is wearing a white gi.

Teens jiu jitsu is aimed at older children, aged between 11 and 15 (high school age).

The classes run for 60 minutes.

What should I expect in a class?

At the start of each class, we have a quick ‘safety briefing’ to make sure that all students are aware of how to keep themselves and their teammates safe. Safety is emphasised throughout the class to make sure that everyone has a good time, and no one gets hurt.

Classes generally include:

  • Warm up exercises, based on essential movements needed for jiu jitsu.

  • Fundamental techniques in a game-based format, to help teens learn instinctively.

  • Constraints based games to help demonstrate how techniques can be used in practice.

  • Controlled sparring which is closely monitored by coaches for safety.

What should I wear and bring with me?

Wear shoes to and from the studio, even if it’s hot. You will train in bare feet, so it’s best to keep them clean for everyone’s comfort. We suggest you bring slides or thongs for wearing in the bathroom.

If you’re new to training, wear a t-shirt and shorts, trackpants, or leggings. Clothes should have minimal pockets, zippers, etc.

When you’re ready, wear a Gi to classes. Gis are available from the studio, but you can also source your own online.

We also suggest you bring a water bottle; we also have water and cups in the studio.

Whatever their goals, students in our teens’ classes will learn practical skills in a supportive environment. We use a combination of drills, games, and controlled sparring to help your teen practice their jiu jitsu. Students will also improve their resilience, focus and discipline, which help them in all areas of life.

For those interested, there are opportunities to compete and test your skills.
