Frequently Asked Questions
-
What style of Jiu Jitsu do you do?
Our style has come from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), but we also include concepts and techniques from judo and wrestling.
Is there an age limit for Jiu Jitsu?
No, we have students from 4 years old and up into their 60s. Jiu Jitsu is suitable for anyone who wants to learn.
-
Do you have a trial class?
Yes, we offer a free trial class for new students, or if you prefer you can join our 5 week Introduction to Jiu Jitsu course if you don’t have any grappling experience.
I’m new to Jiu Jitsu. What should I expect in my first class?
Our 5 week Introduction to Jiu Jitsu course is for you!
Learn essential movements and techniques from an experienced black belt in a supportive, friendly environment. Build confidence and skills to seamlessly join our all-levels classes. It’s a great start to becoming a grappler!
What do I need to wear to my first class?
We recommend you wear a t-shirt and shorts, trackpants, or leggings to your first class. Clothes should have minimal pockets, zippers, etc.
Bring slides or thongs to wear when you are not on the mats, to keep your feet and the training surface clean.

What’s in your kids classes?
Our kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes offer more than just self defence. We focus on dynamic, jiu-jitsu based warmups that improve coordination, balance, and body awareness right from the start.
In our classes, your child will learn how to defend themselves through fun, structured techniques and safe, controlled sparring. Beyond self-defence, they’ll also develop important life skills like focus, respect, and resilience.
What’s the minimum age to join in?
At 4.5 to 5 years old, your child should be ready to start BJJ. Younger children may struggle with concentrating for the whole class, but we’re always happy to have a chat about your circumstances.
What should my child wear to the class?
When they are new to training, we suggest they wear a t-shirt and shorts, trackpants, or leggings. Clothes should have minimal pockets, zippers, etc.
When they’re ready, we recommend they wear a gi to classes. Gis are available from the studio, but you can also source your own online.
Do you accept Active kids vouchers?
Absolutely! Have a chat to us when you’re in the studio about how to apply these to your membership.
Do your coaches have Working With Children Checks?
Yes, all our coaches have a current WWCC. The safety of your children is very important to us.
What if my child is sick or injured?
If your child is feeling sick or is injured, please keep them at home until they are feeling better. If the injury is expected to take a few weeks to heal and you would like to pause your membership, please contact us to arrange this.
What if my child gets hurt during the class?
In the unlikely event that your child is injured during a class, our coaches all have current first aid accreditations and a lot of experience managing sporting injuries. At the start of each class, we have a ‘safety briefing’ to make sure that everyone understands how to communicate to their training partner, the ‘house rules’ (no running, shouting, and to practice respectful listening), and to talk to the coach when if they are hurt or need to leave the mats.

What if it’s hot?
The studio is climate controlled, so no need to worry about the heat outside. We keep the studio at a comfortable temperature for training.
What if it’s cold?
If you’re still cold after doing some warmups, we have heating for those cold mornings.
Do you clean your mats?
Yes, we clean the mats after every class. Cleanliness is very important to us, so we want to provide training areas that are clean and free from things that will stop you from training.
To help us keep the training areas clean, we ask you wear shoes to the studio, and only have bare feet on the mats.
